In speaking with my clients about their websites, I eventually discuss Search Engine Optimization.  When I started designing, the thought of SEO intimidated me. There are so many factors involved in optimizing a website that I had no clue what techniques worked.  But I found that the basics work best, and I stopped chasing complex techniques that get away from what’s important. Here are some of the basic strategies that I use when review my clients’ websites:

  1. Add the following line to the <head> section of your webpage:
    <meta name="keywords" content="Your Keyword #1, Your Keyword #2"/>

  2. Add the following line to the <head> section of your webpage:
    <meta name="description" content="A description of your website that includes the keyword"/>

  3. Add the <title> tag in the <head> section of your webpage:
    <title>The title of your website that includes the main keyword of your website</title>

  4. Be sure that the most relevant headings or titles on your webpage are surrounded in <h1> tags.

  5. Be sure that any relevant headings or titles on your webpage include the relevant keyword you’re targeting. For example, if you’re targeting the keyword los angeles coupons, a primary heading on your website might read Your source for Los Angeles Coupons!

There are another 5 tips that I’ll post here in the future that I consider very basic. In the meantime, review your website and see if the basic items above are included in your pages. You would be surprised at how many of these items are overlooked in webpages, likely because it’s a very tedious process.
